Finney, Benjamin

FINNEY, Benjamin[Ben] (1830-1882) was born at Chester, Cheshire, England, eldest son of William Finney, a painter, later farmer of 16ac, and Mary Thomas. In 1856 in Cheshire, he married Anne Jane Smith and in 1861 he was listed in West Derby as an accountant to the Royal Insurance Co. After migrating to Queensland in 1863 the family lived at Kangaroo Point before joining the rush to the Gympie goldfields in 1868, where Ben was an accountant, general commission agent and sharebroker. In 1876, he was closely involved with the erection of the two-storey wooden School of Mines and Mining Museum. When it was completed by January 1877, Finney was credited as ‘Architect, Clerk of works and Inspector’ although nothing is yet known of his having building experience. The School did not open until July. He continued to be active in Gympie until late in 1882 when he was convicted of embezzlement of monies belonging to the South Glanmire & Monkland Gold Mining Co and goaled for 12 months with hard labour. He was admitted to the St Helena Prison in September 1882 but died from dysentery while imprisoned in December 1882. His death was unreported.
