Echlin,

ECHLIN, John Fleming(1844‒1908) was born in Downpatrick, Ireland, eldest son of George Fleming Echlin, Governor of the County Down Goal, and Harriet Georgina Johnston. He was living in Dublin in 1866 when he married Christina Georgina Anne Hunter Carleton, He migrated to Queensland, arriving in Brisbane in January 1874, but details of his earlier life are unknown. In 1883 he joined in partnership with the brothers FHL BENWELL as BENWELL & ECHLIN, architects, surveyors and agents of Townsville. After the death of Frank Benwell in 1884, John AHERN was briefly a partner in the renamed Benwell, Ahern & Echlin which was dissolved in September 1886. After Echlin moved to Tasmania the practice continued in name as Benwell & Echlin, and later Benwell & Co. until 1893. In Townsville, Echlin had been a director of the Townsville Gas and Coke Company. Echlin was inventive and in 1890 took out a patent for a vending machine and like his partner Benwell, Echlin was active in the Townsville Naval Brigade. In Hobart Echlin taught commercial subjects at the Technical College. Echlin spent his later life in Sydney where he died. His brother, Robert Boyd Echlin (1851‒1938) was a well-known pioneering pastoralist. He founded the Mounted Infantry in Queensland and by 1892 he was a captain in the Queensland Defence Force, in which capacity he served in 1899‒1902 in the South African War. In World War I he was a camp commandant, while his daughter Gladys Ivy Echlin served as a nurse and his son Richard Fleming Warren Echlin joined the Grenadier Guards in England.
