Dunsmore Henry

DUNSMORE Henry (1857–?1929) was born at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, third son of William Dunsmore, blacksmith, and Barbara Wallace. By 1871, he was an apprentice and in 1881 was listed as a Mechanical Draftsman, probably working for A&W SMITH, millwrights and machine engineers of Glasgow who were already supplying sugar mills to Queensland. By 1891, Dunsmore was General Manager, Mechanical Engineering. In 1895 he migrated to Queensland arriving in Brisbane in July as agent for A&W Smith then contractors for the supply and erection of the Mulgrave Sugar Mill at Cairns. Dunsmore called tenders for sub-contracts (wooden buildings, staging, concrete foundations, building in boilers and main flue, brick chimney stack, and erection of sugar machinery) in December 1895. In 1896, he also oversaw erection of the Moreton Mill, Nambour and the Central Mill, Mossman. Subsequently he visited Britain to recruit staff. After returning to Queensland, Dunsmore remained in Queensland, closing down the office in 1902 and in 1903, when he lodged a patent for breaking down and discharging sugar from centrifugals, he was listed

as an engineer for the Nerang River Sugar Co. living at Benowa, Southport. Descendents think he died in Brisbane in 1930 but this has not been confirmed. It seems more likely that in c1905 he returned to Scotland, possibly dying at Paisley in 1929. His younger brother Alexander Dunsmore (1865–1934) was also a mechanical engineer.
