Drew, Samuel
DREW, Samuel (1845–1907) was born at Illogan, Cornwall, England, second son of Edward Drew, a master carpenter, and Elizabeth Polkinghorne. By 1861 he and an elder brother were apprenticed to a carpenter. After completing his apprenticeship, he migrated to the United States where he may have enlisted in July 1864 on the Union side in the Civil War, serving with Company G of the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment, a famous unit dating from the Revolutionary War. In 1867, at Portland, Maine, he married Jane Harris, who had also been born in Cornwall. By 1869, they had moved to Mineral Point, Wisconsin, a lead-mining town in decline, where he worked as a carpenter in 1870. By 1873, they had moved to Chicago and by 1880 to Waukesha, Wisconsin, which on the basis of its spring water, was developing as a resort. One of Drew’s colleagues or employees was William STREET who married nearby in 1881. The Drews were still in Wisconsin in 1882, but in 1885 migrated to Queensland where Drew worked for Street at Sandgate.
