D’evlin, John Joseph

D’EVLIN, John Joseph (c1839–1888) was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, the fourth son of a Dublin builder, John D’Evlin, and Jane Owens. He married Anne Gamble at Cork, Ireland, on 17 February 1860. D’Evlin had emigrated to Queensland by 1863 and first worked as a carpenter. He was a building contractor in South Brisbane by 1866 when he built RG SUTER’s early outside-studded West Oxley School. When the school opened the teacher emphasised the value of beauty in teaching children – the trees, grass and the elegant school. This was the first of many buildings that D’Evlin constructed to Suter’s designs: the Doughboy Creek Anglican Church and St James’ Roman Catholic School, Spring Hill, for Suter; and the Townsville, Goodna, Maryborough, Yeerongpilly and Coorparoo Schools for the Board of Education. In the early 1870s D’Evlin was an inspector to the Board and was presumably “one of Mr Suter’s clique” criticised by a frustrated contractor, for D’Evlin named his third son after Suter. Following Suter’s fall from favour with the Board, D’Evlin continued contracting and built Richard Gailey’s Belmont school in 1876, the latter shortly before D’Evlin’s insolvency in May that year. Thereafter he worked as clerk of works, but his role rarely identified but including in 1879 for WARREN Bros of Roma for erection of the Morven Police Station. After 1883 D’Evlin resumed contracting in Brisbane until his death on 16 March 1888 following a fall from scaffolding.
