Corby, Robert

CORBY, Robert (c1826–?1869) was born at St Martin in the Fields, Middlesex, England, the son of Thomas Corby, keeper of the Angel Inn, Turnpike Road, Hillingdon, Middlesex, and Mary Lawes. He married Mary Ablett in 1849 and was living with his parents in 1851, working as a builder. Corby arrived at Sydney in January 1853 where he was employed as a clerk of works with a leading architect John Frederick Hilly (1810–83) and from November 1854 as 1st Clerk of Works in the Colonial Architects Department. In August 1855, Corby was involved in a scandal over alleged bribes in relation to approving variations. His claim to have been libelled by a contractor Thomas Coghlan led to a court case with many of the Department’s staff giving evidence at a committal hearing but when the case was to be heard, Coghlan failed to appear and the case was dismissed. After the murder in 1857 of his brother-in-law at Carcoar, Corby gave evidence. He again gave evidence in a case of theft of material for the Prymont Bridge for which he was superintendent. After his wife died at Braidwood, NSW in 1861, he returned to England where he is thought to have died in 1869.
