Coase, John Emanuel

COASE, John Emanuel (1835–1907) was born at St Mary Major, Exeter, Devon, England, eldest son of Henry Hannaford Coase, a joiner, and Elizabeth Shapcott, a crape cleaner. Coase was an apprentice carpenter in 1851 and married Mary Burridge in London in 1854. In 1861 he was listed as a carpenter at Rotherhithe, Surrey, In the following year they migrated to Brisbane where we worked in the Wide Bay district at Gin Gin in 1864 and at Maryborough in 1866. By 1871 he was working as a builder in Gladstone where his contracts included St Saviour’s Church of England in 1874 and the Australian Joint Stock Bank in 1880. During the 1880s he was in partnership with Edward Norvill (c1832–1895) as Coase & Norvill, building contractors and auctioneers. After Norvill’s death, Coase worked as an architect, building contractor, auctioneer, and undertaker in Gladstone and in partnership with JTW [John Thomas Willoughby] Brown (c1864–1926), auctioneer. Coase died on 6 April 1907.
