Clelland, John

CLELLAND, John (1865–1918) was born at Templepatrick, Antrim, Ireland, son of Allan Clelland (1845–1926) and Jane Fleming. Allan Clelland who had been born at County Down, Ireland trained as a millwright before he arrived in Queensland in 1882 with his wife and family. Settling at Roma he worked initially as a carpenter, then in partnership with his sons, John and Robert (c1869–1931) as Clelland & Sons, contractor at Roma. After Allan Clelland was bankrupted in 1891, John worked as a builder and contractor in the Bollon district where he also offered to draw plans and prepare specifications. His work included woolsheds and a model homestead at Woolerina. He returned to Roma by 1896. Subsequently he worked again with his father who had moved to Cunnamulla where John was listed as an architect and builder by 1898. By 1903, John was listed as a carpenter at Texas, Qld. From 1908, John worked briefly as inspector of works for various shire and divisional board councils including Caboolture, Rosenthal, Goolman and Kingaroy. While he was working for the Shire Council at Kingaroy in 1918, he died soon after suffering a stroke.
