Chattin, James
CHATTIN, James (c1842–1890) was born in London, son of James Chattin, a water gilder, and Mary Ann Linklater/Leatham. He trained as a carriage builder. In July 1861, he married Mary Ann Howse in London shortly before leaving for Queensland where he arrived at Maryborough in 1863. After visiting Gayndah, he moved to Sydney where he worked for 12 months. On returning to Queensland, he worked at Yengarie (near Maryborough) before joining the gold rush to Gympie where he worked as a carpenter. In 1870 after settling at Bundaberg Chattin began business as a builder and carpenter, offering “plans and specifications of buildings in all styles”. His contracts included additions and repairs to the Custom House in 1877. After 1875 he was also an undertaker and storekeeper but concentrated on cabinetmaking and undertaking from 1879. After his wife died in 1886, he married Caroline Christine Thomsen, in 1887 at Bundaberg, where he was running a furniture emporium when he died on 30 August 1890.
