Chatman/
CHATMAN/CHAPMAN, James (c1815–1844) alias James Sharp, was born at Lancashire where he was a weaver and stableman before being convicted for larceny in 1834 and sentenced for 12 months. In 1835, after being convicted of house-breaking and sentenced for 14 years, he was transported to New South Wales arriving in October 1836. In late 1843 at Braidwood he was granted a ticket-of-leave but still required permission to marry Keturah Small at Sydney in March 1844. They moved to Jondaryan Station on the Darling Downs where he was a carpenter, credited with slab huts and other structures, but died in December at Jondaryan. His only son and namesake committed suicide at Eugowra in 1904.
