Burns, John

BURNS, John (1830–1903) was born in Edinburgh, eldest son of William Burns, a joiner, and his wife, Kate. It is not yet known when he arrived in Australia but his three eldest siblings all migrated to Australia. John was listed as a builder when he married Julia Feehan at Brisbane in October 1862. He may have been working in the day labour force of the Colonial Architect’s office when he was employed as a foreman (possibly only part-time) for construction of a powder magazine at Kangaroo Point from April to July 1866. In the recession which followed, he lost his Government position. He may have joined the rush to the Gympie goldfields where a partnership Mark & Burns built a Congregational Church in 1868. He later lived in Brisbane in the Fortitude Valley.
