Borthwick, John

BORTHWICK, John (1836–?) was born in Kilkaldy, Fifeshire, Scotland, elder son of Hugh Jamieson Borthwick, a manufacturer, and Helen Orr. A John Borthwick, a joiner, was lodging in the household of William Stevenson, a ‘Head joiner’ at Leith, Midlothian in 1861. In 1868, there was a John Borthwick as an overseer at Ipswich; and in 1870, at in Carpentaria Downs. By late 1873 Borthwick was an auctioneer and commission agent in Millchester. He married Sarah Elizabeth Graham at Lornsleigh, near Bowen in January 1874. Soon afterwards, presumably with knowledge of building, he was requested by fellow residents to prepare plans for the National School at Millchester. He was living in Townsville by March 1875 and soon moved to Adelaide where his wife died in childbirth at Queenstown, SA, in November 1878. His subsequent whereabouts are not known. Three of his siblings also left Scotland, two for the USA and a third to live in South Africa.
