Blacket, Cyril
BLACKET, Cyril (1857-1937) was born at Glebe, Sydney, third son of son of ET BLACKET and Sarah Mease. After completing articles with his father, he qualified as an Associate of the RIBA in London. After returning to Australia through Canada and the United States, he entered partnership with his father as BLACKET & SON. After ET Blacket’s death in February 1883, he continued the practice in partnership with his brother Arthur BLACKET as BLACKET BROS. From 1880 Cyril was a Lecturer at the University of Sydney and the Sydney Technological College where in 1884 he succeeded John KIRKPATRICK as Head of Department. From 1882, he also taught at the University of Sydney, until in 1886 ill-health forced his retirement from both teaching and practice and moved to “Tasman Park”, St. George’s Basin, Shoalhaven, in southern NSW. He resumed sole practice at Nowra in 1888. Although from 1889 Arthur was his Sydney agent, when Cyril resumed practice in Sydney late in 1892, it was by himself. By then he had resigned from both the RIBA and IANSW and was critical of the local Institute. From 1894 he resumed teaching as lecturer in Architecture and teacher of Building Construction at the Sydney Technical College. His brother Owen BLACKET had been lecturer in Mechanical Engineering since 1888. After briefly being insolvent in 1896, Cyril resumed practice, including as Diocesan Architect in Sydney. After retiring c1925, he recorded his reminiscences as a Sydney Architect in 1932 and his experience with using Australian timbers in 1935. He died at Manly, Sydney in 1937. His son, Pendrill Cyril Blacket (1885–1958), was also an architect.
