Bayley, Athol
BAYLEY, Athol(1866–1936) was appointed to the Roads Branch of the NSW Public Works Department in March 1882 and promoted to cadet in July 1883, He resigned on 20 September after he was appointed as junior draftsman in the Bridges Branch of the Queensland Public Works Department. Like his colleague, Harry STANWIX, Bayley was brought from Sydney to assist JH DANIELLS, the newly appointed Engineer of Bridges, to expedite work in the Bridges Branch. All three were retrenched in July 1889 after controversy over several major contracts. In that month he wrote a long letter to the Editor of the Telegraph outlining his proposals for extra bridge accommodation for Brisbane including cross-river rail. He returned to New South Wales. He may have been Athol Carl Bayley (1866–1936), born at Armidale, eldest son of Alexander Charles Bayley (1824-1909), a superintendent of works, and Amy Mary Mildren Bayley, later also known as Charles Smith, who was convicted and jailed on various occasions for obscenity and other charges. He died at Wyong. He was not closely related to George William Alfred Bayley (1822-1893) a long-term employee in the NSW Public Works Department.
