Allan, Peter
ALLAN, Peter (1859–1925) was born at Soffala, Turon River, NSW, third son of William Allan and Mary Ann Glenesk. William Allan had been a soldier in India, Van Diemen’s Land from 1840, and New South Wales from 1847. Subsequently he served with the Mounted Police in New South Wales and later Queensland as an officer with the Mounted Native Police. Peter Allan worked as a carpenter with the Central Division of the Railways Department in Rockhampton until 1880. By 1886 he had settled in Cairns. After briefly working for Walter Francis, a blacksmith, he rejoined the Railways as a foreman-carpenter, rising to the position of Maintenance Inspector for the Cairns Railway. He was closely associated with the Cairns Hospital and Freemasonry, serving as a Grand Master of the Loyal Trinity Lodge (MUIOOF), and in 1897 designed the Lodge’s hall. Allan was twice married: to Charlotte Cooke in 1882 and after her death in 1891, to Amelia Deleatha Martin in 1894. He died at Cairns.
