Blacket, Arthur
BLACKET, Arthur (1848-1929) was born in Sydney, eldest son of ET BLACKET and Sarah Mease. After occupying several clerical positions and working in his father’s office, he was overseer of Eugowra Station owned by his uncle, Hanbury Clements. Subsequently he served articles with Clements’ younger brother, Ingram Clements, a surveyor of Narrabri. Later Blacket joined the NSW Department of Roads and Bridges, based in Forbes from 1877. He married Mary Louisa Home in 1915. After his father’s death in February 1883, Arthur Blacket returned to Sydney to practise with his younger brother Cyril BLACKET as BLACKET BROS. In 1885 Arthur was commissioned by the Bishop of North Queensland, the Rev. GH Stanton, to design St James’ Cathedral, Townsville. After visiting Townsville in February 1885, he produced alternative designs: one, Italian Gothic with a central dome; the other, “semi-Norman” which was accepted with some changes. He was an unsuccessful entrant in an 1890 competition for the Rockhampton Girls’ Grammar School. He died in Sydney on 4 August 1929. His eldest son, Nigel, was a surveyor.
