Baxendell, Edward

BAXENDELL, Edward (1819–1865) was born at Manchester, Lancashire, second son of Thomas Baxendell, farmer and later land agent, and Mary Shepley. After being raised in Manchester he moved to London where his occupation was joiner when he married Mary Zipporah Elder in 1846, but in 1851, he was listed as an architect’s clerk and in 1861 as an architect and surveyor with an office on the Strand, where he was associated with the Westminster Freehold Land Society, an early example of this social movement to encourage saving while also enfranchising reform voters. Afflicted with tuberculosis, he migrated to Queensland with his family. After departing from Gravesend on 8th May 1862, they arrived at Moreton Bay on 8th August. His death only three years later was not reported. Where Baxendell was employed in Brisbane is not known but his occupation was listed as architect when his children enrolled at the Normal School. Following Edward’s death, his widow, ill and unable to care for her children, admitted her sons to the recently established Diamantina Orphanage where Joseph Arthur Baxendell (1856–1938) was adopted by an English missionary and photographer, William Kennett, spending three years with Kennett at Somerset, Cape York. JA Baxendell became a well-known teacher.
