CANALI,Joseph Augustinenée Giuseppe Canali (1841–1915) was born in Rome, Italy, son of an employee of the Papal States. From 1859, he studied philosophy and mathematics at the Collegio Romano, then architecture and engineering at the Sapienza University, Rome, before he served with the Papal Zouaves until the fall of Rome in 1870. At the behest of Bishop Quinn, Canali came to Queensland in 1872, intending to join the priesthood. Prior to his ordination, he worked until March 1874 on the completion of St Stephen’s Cathedral. From late that year he taught at St James School until 1877 when he entered St Kilian’s College, South Brisbane to study for his ordination as a deacon in June 1879. Thereafter he offered special assistance at the Brisbane and Children’s Hospitals, while he called tenders and oversaw buildings for the Catholic Church, including a gatekeepers lodge to All Hallows, roofing to Christian Bros School, Gregory Terrace, a school at Red Hill and work at St Kilian’s College, South Brisbane. About 1883, he transferred to St Patrick’s parish in Fortitude Valley where he served until his death.
